Living Cost for International Students in Australia

There are no definite figures or costs for each person. The cost of living for an International Student always varies based on person to person life and living style.

We can categorise living costs into the following categories

  1. Education cost/Educational institute fees
  2. Accommodation rent
  3. Groceries
  4. Medical expense, because medical insurance does not cover every medical bill.
  5. Unforeseen expense, say, establishments cost, travelling, holidays etc
  6. Extra cost depends if you have dependents

Education fees are upfront or disclosed, there is no confusion. Next is your accommodation cost always varies based on City and area. In every city of Australia, there are few suburbs that are very expensive than medium-priced areas and low cost living suburbs. Usually, low-cost localities are inconvenient, Inconvenient in this sense because they are far away and you have to spend more time going to your University or educational institute.

Plus it depends on whether you prefer to live alone? Or in sharing with roommates or flatmates, you came by yourself or with dependants eg, wife or have kids too, In that case, you will not live in shared accommodation because of your privacy.

Food is the next main expense, this also depends and varies on your eating habits, are you living alone, are you have dependents, would you like to buy food from restaurants or you can cook by yourself.

For most medical expenses, you need not worry. They are covered by your medical insurance provider but still, there are many conditions or tests that are not covered and those ones, you have to pay out of your pocket.

When an international student moves to Australia, he starts his new life. When someone starts a new life in a new country, there are so many things that he needs to buy for his day to day living. His outfits, households and study-related stuff. On top of that, you need to pay for a mobile phone and internet etc.

If someone comes with dependents then there are extra expenses and they vary too. You have to pay more for accommodation, food and other household expenses. If you have kids then you have to pay their fees in government or private schools, their medical and many other expenses.

The Australian government’s estimate is around $22,000 per year. But many surveys show that the average single international student spends between $20 k to $30 k per year but still it depends on someone’s living arrangements.

All above figures are only estimated costs as a guide only, in Australian dollars and nearly correct as per publishing time and may vary.
